(in)coherence - MArch Primer

MArch II, 2023

The play is set amongst the site of Pontypridd Market Quarter, which it uses as it’s main inspiration and stage location. This causes the sites’ three main actors, the town, theatre and market (split into multiple actors), to become it’s main focus and subject.

It acts as my initial emotional response to a site of spatial disconnections and emotional confusion.

The written piece, split into four acts, externalises the perceived emotions of each actor of the Market Quarter site, in the case of the market and town, a feeling of hope despite their pasts, in the case of the cinema, a feeling of hopelessness. The final act, building from the first 3, looks to show how the actors combine to achieve coherence amongst their current incoherence.

It conveys these emotions through the usage of personified monologues and a set of stage directions which highlight the spatial and emotional relationship between each actor, the wider site and the community.

(in)coherence

MArch II, 2023

Below is my full primer submission and accompanying play titled (In)Coherence which acted as my main, and a new, form of architectural interrogation. This element of the thesis defined the key questions of whether a building can tell of it's own memories.
